Intensive therapy centres

Some families choose intensive or block therapy programmes alongside NHS care. Here are UK centres and the questions worth asking.

What these centres offer

Intensive programmes usually offer concentrated blocks of therapy, sometimes with specialist equipment. Examples are suspension therapy at The Footsteps Centre and Conductive Education at Paces and the National Institute of Conductive Education. Most UK centres describe their work in terms of cerebral palsy and neurological conditions rather than PURA specifically.

Questions to ask before booking

What qualifications and HCPC registration do the therapists hold? Have they worked with children with low tone and complex epilepsy? How will they share goals with your NHS team? What are the full costs, and are grants available? Has your child's medical team said this is safe for them? No therapy can cure PURA syndrome. Be cautious of any provider that suggests otherwise.

Outside the UK

Two centres abroad publicly describe working with children with PURA: Rive du Lac in Switzerland and NAPA in Australia and the USA. They are listed under PURA organisations & specialists for information. We have not assessed them.
